A Great Resource for Dogs With Separation Anxiety
Update
d for Shawnee & Kansas City Dog Owners
I originally shared the article below quite a while ago, and I’m going back through some older posts to double-check the information and make sure it still reflects what I see every day working with dogs and owners here in the Shawnee and Kansas City area.
Separation anxiety is one of those issues where bad advice ages poorly — and good advice holds up. This is one of those resources that still holds up, which is why I’m resurfacing it and adding some context based on real-world cases I continue to work with locally.
Separation anxiety is one of those behavior issues that can completely turn a household upside down if you’re not prepared for what you’re actually dealing with.
This is a great article and an even better resource for dog owners struggling with separation anxiety. The techniques discussed are not complicated — but they do take time, and that’s the part many people underestimate.
Helping a dog with separation anxiety usually means:
-
rearranging your daily routine
-
being more intentional about departures and arrivals
-
committing to consistency for several months, not weeks
This is not a “try it for a weekend and see what happens” kind of problem.
Just as important, separation anxiety is not something you should tackle alone. Having the right veterinarian involved and working with a trainer who has real experience with anxiety-based behaviors can make a significant difference in both progress and sanity.
With the right plan, support, and expectations, it can and does get better — but only if everyone involved understands what they’re committing to.
