A Kansas City Dog Trainer shares a blog about using Interactive Feeding Toys to help with Calming Dogs
Safety Cue Toys: What Actually Helps Dogs Stay Calm?
This is an excellent article from a great science-based resource (and one worth signing up for). It tackles an important question: which safety cue toys actually help keep dogs calm, occupied, and less anxious — and which ones don’t?
What Is a Safety Cue Toy?
A safety cue toy is an object given to a dog during times they might otherwise feel stressed or uncertain — such as when they’re left alone — to help create a sense of predictability and calm. Over time, the toy itself becomes a cue that things are okay, helping the dog settle, stay occupied, and make better choices instead of becoming anxious or destructive.
The article looks at different types of safety cue toys and evaluates their effectiveness. I’ve used all of them over the years, and after reading this, I may rethink some of my assumptions based on the results they present.
If you’re trying to help a dog stay busy and relaxed — instead of anxious or destructive — this is absolutely worth a look.
