Kiss Dog Training Kansas City 🐾 When Dog Movies Create Real-World Problems

Whether it’s 101 Dalmatians, Hotel for Dogs, or Beverly Hills Chihuahua, movies about dogs have a long history of creating sudden demand for specific breeds.

And every time it happens, the same pattern follows.

Demand spikes.
Over-breeding begins.
Backyard breeders rush in to “keep up.”
Shelters fill up.

On top of that, the dogs you see in movies are highly trained professionals, not accurate representations of what living with that breed is actually like day to day. What you’re watching on screen is training, structure, and management—not raw personality.

🐾 I Like Dog Movies — I Just Watch Them Differently

I want to be clear: I like dog movies. I really do.

But I watch them through the eyes of a dog trainer, not as someone falling in love with a breed based on a two-hour storyline. And I am definitely not the person who sees a movie and then runs out on a whim to buy a dog.

That distinction matters.

🐾 The Movie “Max” and the Belgian Malinois

One of the more recent examples is the movie Max.

The story centers around a Belgian Malinois who served as a military working dog and is adopted by the family of his fallen handler. It’s a compelling storyline, and yes—I’ll probably watch it too.

But before anyone walks away from that movie thinking, “I want one of those dogs,” there’s something important you need to understand:

The Belgian Malinois is not a casual pet.

This breed is intelligent, driven, intense, and requires an enormous amount of structure, work, and daily engagement to thrive. They are incredible dogs in the right hands—and absolute disasters in the wrong ones.

Before even considering this breed, I strongly recommend reading this firsthand account from a trainer who actually lives with one:

It does an excellent job explaining both the beauty of the breed and the responsibility that comes with it.

🐾 Love the Breed — Know the Breed

My goal here isn’t to discourage anyone from loving dogs. It’s to encourage people to love breeds responsibly.

All dogs are beautiful. Many are best admired from afar. Owning a purebred dog means knowing:

  • the temperament

  • the energy level

  • the training requirements

  • and the lifestyle fit before you bring one home

That knowledge is what keeps dogs out of shelters and in their forever homes.

Another option that always deserves consideration is adopting a good old-fashioned mutt. They make wonderful companions, and many already need a home you could provide.

Whatever you choose—just promise to make it an educated decision.
