Bell Training for Potty Training: A Simple System That Actually Works in Kansas City Homes
How to Use Bell Training for Potty Training in Kansas City
If you’ve worked with K.I.S.S. Dog Training for any amount of time, you’ve probably heard me talk about bell training as part of potty training your dog.
But I don’t teach it the way most people do.
Instead of hanging bells on the door and hoping the dog figures it out, I build the system in layers.
First, I hang the bells on the door I want the dog to use to go outside.
Then I teach the dog that when I ring the bell, they come to the door and I let them out. That creates a clear association:
Bell equals outside.
After that, I teach a simple “touch” command — the dog learns to touch my hand with their nose. This can be taught very early in training.
Once the dog understands “touch,” I’ll place my hand near the bells and say “touch.” When the dog bumps the bells and they make noise, I immediately open the door and let them outside.
Now the system connects:
- Bells make noise
- Noise makes door open
- Door opening means outside
After enough repetition, the bell ringing starts happening on its own.
That’s when the communication system is working.
🐾 The Dark Side of Bell Training
Let’s be honest.
Some dogs quickly realize that ringing the bells also gives them access to the backyard. And that might mean:
- Laying in the sun
- Barking at the imaginary invader
- Digging holes
- Chewing things they shouldn’t
That doesn’t mean bell training failed.
It means your dog learned that bells open doors.
The solution is structure and supervision. If your dog rings the bells, you take them out — but that doesn’t mean unlimited, unsupervised yard time. Keep trips short and intentional.
Most Kansas City dog owners would gladly trade a dog who occasionally wants to sunbathe for a dog that’s peeing and pooping in the house.
🐾 The Tools
I often recommend Poochie Bells because they’re durable and hold up well during the learning phase:

The product isn’t magic.
Consistency is.
